Varun Raheja, an engineer from Indore, launched Raheja Solar Food Processing Pvt. Ltd. (RSFP), a promising social enterprise in 2018. He is credited for Innovating India’s first low cost and foldable solar dryer designed especially for small and marginal farmers who could not store their excess produce and are forced to discard them every season, which might later leads to high debts and farmer’s suicides.
Varun’s initiative effectively curbs food wastage by increasing the shelf life of farm produce and upgrade their standard of earning and living by giving them more market control.
Ever since he was introduced to the ‘waste-to-wealth’ theory in school, Varun has worked on projects related to waste reduction and recycling. But it was during his first year in college when Varun began to dive deep into the concrete ways of upscaling and recycling waste.
Varun did an internship at Jimmy McGilligan Centre for Sustainable Development, where he learnt about farmer’s problems. He worked on three waste-to-wealth projects. One of these three was the German-made solar dryer. He was also fortunate to work under Padma Shri Janak Palta McGilligan who has championed the cause of sustainable living.
Since he started, Varun has been Recognised by The United Nations Environment, DD News, The Better India, The Machine Maker, Sakshi Telugu, Dainik Bhaskar and Many more. Mr. Raheja was also honored with the Dr. Shirin Gadhia Sustainability Award in 2018.
